Summary

"Once there was a tree。。。and she loved a little boy。"

So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein。

Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk。。。and the tree was happy。 But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave。

This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation。 Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return。

Great story Beautiful lesson for both children and adults alike。 We must take time to acknowledge and care for the nurturers in our lives。 Sometimes we end up taking them for granted until it's too late。 Great story Beautiful lesson for both children and adults alike。 We must take time to acknowledge and care for the nurturers in our lives。 Sometimes we end up taking them for granted until it's too late。 。。。more

This story is criticized for a reason。 The boy in the story constantly seeks more and more from the female (which is deemed as a "she", by the way) and is never satisfied with what the tree has to offer to care for him。 The boy only seems to use the tree for his needs, intermittently, leaving the tree mostly uncared for。 The tree ends up giving its own metaphorical life for the boy's happiness and in the end, he was still unsatisfied because he then decided he missed the tree。 I was repulsed by This story is criticized for a reason。 The boy in the story constantly seeks more and more from the female (which is deemed as a "she", by the way) and is never satisfied with what the tree has to offer to care for him。 The boy only seems to use the tree for his needs, intermittently, leaving the tree mostly uncared for。 The tree ends up giving its own metaphorical life for the boy's happiness and in the end, he was still unsatisfied because he then decided he missed the tree。 I was repulsed by all of the above, but moreover, I was disgruntled because the beginning of the story is uncomfortable to read as it seems to sort of have an underlying relationship almost with the tree。 Not a good read for children or adults。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really don't know what to think about this book。 I read it with my daughter and she was trying to grasp the meaning of it。 To me the story is quite sad, that the boy just takes and takes and takes , all the while the tree kerps giving him everything he asked for until she has nothing left and the boy is never happy。 He claimed he wanted all of these things but he was never happy with what he got。 Pretty sad life。 I really don't know what to think about this book。 I read it with my daughter and she was trying to grasp the meaning of it。 To me the story is quite sad, that the boy just takes and takes and takes , all the while the tree kerps giving him everything he asked for until she has nothing left and the boy is never happy。 He claimed he wanted all of these things but he was never happy with what he got。 Pretty sad life。 。。。more

A very sensible story to narrate to children which can improve their virtues。 The book can be viewed from different perspective。 From an ecocentric view, it displays the altruism of nature trying to provide for our insatiable demands。 If personified, it can display an image of a character in our life (mother, friend, partner。。)whose virtues and generosity are taken advantage of by us。 Concise yet elaborate。

Sad storySad story。 😥it makes me think how we abuse our environment and how many times it had helped us in so many ways。

This book definitely touched my heart a little bit。 The tree begins to give this boy everything she can because she loves him。 She starts with her apples so he can sell them to make money and eventually even gives up herself, her branches and her trunk。 This book really shows how when you love someone, you would truly do anything for them。 In this case, the tree gave up her most valuable parts to make the boy happy。 I really enjoyed this book and the messages I learned along with it。

The giving tree has a good message of graditute but there is some reasons why I didn't really partially enjoy this book。 One thing I didn't like about this books is that it gives off the message of giving and expecting something back。 the little boy in the book is perceived as a person who gives and expects things back, but this could be a teaching moment for children on what not to do with peers, friends, family and more。 The giving tree has a good message of graditute but there is some reasons why I didn't really partially enjoy this book。 One thing I didn't like about this books is that it gives off the message of giving and expecting something back。 the little boy in the book is perceived as a person who gives and expects things back, but this could be a teaching moment for children on what not to do with peers, friends, family and more。 。。。more

The Giving Tree has always been one of my all time favorite books。 Shel Silversteins illustrations are so classic and nostalglic in such a comforting way。 I've always loved this book because the simple illustrations were enough to tell the story, no color was needed to enhance it because it was all it needed to be on its on。 The Giving Tree has always been one of my all time favorite books。 Shel Silversteins illustrations are so classic and nostalglic in such a comforting way。 I've always loved this book because the simple illustrations were enough to tell the story, no color was needed to enhance it because it was all it needed to be on its on。 。。。more

This is a picture book that tells the story between an apple tree and a boy。 The story begins by telling the readers that there was once a tree that loved a boy, and every day the little boy would not miss visiting the tree。 The boy would play, rest and eat apples from the tree。 As the boy gets older, the relationship between him and the trees somewhat becomes complicated as the boy grows up and demands more from the tree。 The tree, however, remains the same, always seeking to please the boy wit This is a picture book that tells the story between an apple tree and a boy。 The story begins by telling the readers that there was once a tree that loved a boy, and every day the little boy would not miss visiting the tree。 The boy would play, rest and eat apples from the tree。 As the boy gets older, the relationship between him and the trees somewhat becomes complicated as the boy grows up and demands more from the tree。 The tree, however, remains the same, always seeking to please the boy with every request he made。 The black and white illustrations done by Shel Silverstein, who is also the writer, are simple and easier to follow, and the parts only a small sentence in included; the illustrations are easier to interpret what is going on。 The book does an incredible job in developing the theme of taking and giving, which so many readers can identify within their everyday lives。 。。。more

I have varying opinions on this book。 When I was a child, I read this book many times and I loved it。 I guess I always thought it was nice that the tree loved the boy so much。 Reading it now, I realize that the book seems happy on the surface because it mentions that the tree was happy, even when it was left with nothing。 Looking into it deeper, I realized that the boy uses the tree and gives nothing in return, while the tree is willing to give up everything for the boy。 I still love this book, I have varying opinions on this book。 When I was a child, I read this book many times and I loved it。 I guess I always thought it was nice that the tree loved the boy so much。 Reading it now, I realize that the book seems happy on the surface because it mentions that the tree was happy, even when it was left with nothing。 Looking into it deeper, I realized that the boy uses the tree and gives nothing in return, while the tree is willing to give up everything for the boy。 I still love this book, which is why I rated it 4 stars, but now that I have re-read the book years later I understand that it can be interpreted different ways and that there is a deeper meaning to the surface of the text。 I do recommend reading this book, especially if you haven't in a while, just to see your own opinions on it。 。。。more

The Giving Tree is one of those classic books that tell of important lessons that affect children throughout their lives。 It also reminds children the dangers of taking too much from those around them without giving back。
